Fuel strike: Protests reduce speed on major motorways to a crawl By Keith Perry and Charlotte Bailey Last Updated: 6:06PM BST 14/06/2008 Major motorways were reduced to a crawl by go-slow fuel price protests, as more than 100 filling stations ran out of fuel on day two of the Shell drivers' strike.
Rolling roadblocks, some as slow as 10mph, were joined by lorry drivers, farmers in tractors and even caravanners.
The four-day strike by hundreds of tanker drivers working for Shell was disrupting petrol supplies across the UK.
Panic buying has increased demand for petrol by 25 per cent since the strike began, according to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.
At least 112 of the UK's 8,700 petrol stations had run out of fuel - of which 96 were Shell stations.
However, Shell insisted there were few signs of panic among its customers, with most heeding Government and industry pleas to show restraint.
